In order to test medical devices for vulnerabilities, security experts need hands-on-experience with actual devices. Reading research articles and collecting data is very effective in understanding device risk, but real testing needs to be done in-house with the actual instruments.
To combat this problem, the Open Medical Device Research Library was formed in partnership with University of California Berkley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Symantec, and with funding from the Federal Department of Health and Human Services. The leadership team is a combination of computer scientists and medical professionals, which provide a wide variety of outlooks.
Through an application process, device researchers can borrow actual medical devices for testing and research purposes. This was designed to speed up the research process and build a community of medical device security experts.
