Since 2001, October has been designated as National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). This year’s theme is “Shared Responsibility”.
NCSAM is a public campaign aimed at increasing the visibility of cyber initiatives and to open a dialog regarding the importance of personal and shared responsibility. This year’s theme reinforces cyber safety as more than corporate policies, law enforcement and government regulations. It is an individual effort that requires diligence with regard to our presence on the Internet. As technology and innovation continues to develop, our exposure expands. In order to protect our companies, families, and ourselves, it is important to understand the scope of cyber connections within our environment.
Cyber security is concerned with the following:
- Virus, malware infections
- Passwords and general internet use
- Identify theft (financial, medical, work, legal)
- Corporate private data
- Personal health information
- Cyber-bullying
- Mobile devices security (phones, ipads, DSi, PSP, etc.)
- Online predators
- Social networking
StaySafeOnline.org has provided resources regarding what individuals can do to guard themselves and bring awareness to those around them.
