There has been a wide variety of press in the recent years regarding the shortage of trained InfoSec professionals in the USA. Any organization that has security specialists on staff have to invest regularly in training and educational opportunities. However, training programs can be very expensive and organizations need to make sure they’re getting the best possible return on investment.
In order to improve training quality, it might be helpful to spend time thinking about what kind of learning styles your team excels in. Researchers at the University of South Dakota have created an online quiz that allows users to get a better understanding of what kind of learning style is best for them. You can take the quiz here.
Now every situation is different and some people might do better learning in a combination of different ways, but you’ll have to figure out a balance that works right for your team.
Visual Learners
Visual learners have to see things. This could involve demonstrations, photos, videos, and presentations. They can benefit from traditional lecture style training often implemented in Universities and classrooms. However, if you explain something to a visual learner without any illustrations or diagrams, they will find it more difficult to understand the concept.
Auditory Learners
Auditory learners can also benefit from classroom and lecture settings. They don’t need as many visual aids and can pick up concepts by listening to a speaker. The use of podcasting, speeches, and lectures are beneficial to auditory learners.
Kinesthetic Learners
Kinesthetic learners have to engage in hands on training. They do not benefit greatly from lectures or talks. They have to be given hands on tasks and problems that they can solve. They also have to be given proper time to work through the problems.
